Search Engine Optimization:
Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of optimizing a website to be attractive to internet search engines, based on relevance to keywords as an area of focus. The object of SEO is to get your website to the highest ranking possible, so when a user of a search engine types in a keyword, your website comes out on top. The ideal positioning is naturally the first entry in a search engine; however, it has been shown that being on the first two pages is effective.

SEO can be implemented using various methods. It can be based on keyword research, and also website design. The best way to find out if your website is attractive to a search engine, is to have it tested with a person. If they find it too hard to navigate or get confused with the overall appearance, then the robots which the search engines send out to scan your site will more than likely conclude the same. For example, if you have a website on clock making, your keywords would be "clock making," "clock manufacturing," etc. The ratio of these keywords to the content in your website establishes relevancy; and, the more relevant your keywords are to the content, the higher your ranking will be in the search engines. If you have a website which seems disorganized, and hard to navigate, the web crawlers, or the robots which are sent out by the search engines, will not know where to go. For this purpose, Google utilizes something called an XML site map, which is invisible to your visitors, but is a road map for the Google robot to analyze your site.

Search engine ranking is also boosted by the amount of "back links" to your site. These are the amount of websites linking to your site that are also relevant and associated with your keywords. For example, XYZ Clocks is listed on the first page of Google. Your site, PDQ Clocks, is not ranked yet, however XYZ Clocks has a link from their website to yours. This will boost your ranking considerably, and the more links you have in this regard, the higher your ranking is boosted in the search engines.
There are many companies staffed with experts in search engine optimization that perform shortcuts to get indexed in the search engines, as high and as fast as possible. Naturally these companies can come at quite a bit of a cost due to their expertise in understanding the algorithms which search engines use. Even when using these companies, search engine optimization is a slow process, and results may not be seen for a couple of months to even a year. When not using a professional service, the results can take even longer.
If you are a business establishing your presence online through a website, it is important that your business is indexed in Google as quickly as possible. This, of course, maximizes profits and exposure, and gives you an edge -- possibly surpassing your competitors online. If your business website is attractive to the search engines and is boosted to high rankings, chances are your visitors will also find it attractive and use it as a base to transact with you.
Having your website optimized for search engines, whether if it's by a professional or done yourself, will allow for discovery of your website by potential visitors, and can make all the difference in the world, as far as profitability and successful exposure is concerned. Without using proper search engine optimization, the chances are slim to none that your website will be discovered, and your efforts in building a website will be in vain.
